Dirbuster is a tool used to help discover content on a target website during an assessment. It does so by making a massive number of requests for directories to a given site and documenting the responses.

Here are a few options I like to set when using the tool:

Enable the following of redirects

Change my
user-agent
to a common IE or Firefox version

Limit the requests-per-second I can send based on host

If the site is hosted on IIS, use the lowercase word lists

Lower the timeout period

Avoid guessing files unless you have a lot of time or it’s a small site

Just enabling redirects will get quite far superior results.

That being said, remember that Burp supports content discovery as well, but not custom wordlists. The advantage there is that the Burp discover is…well, Burp-aware.

::

Or, at least according to 23andMe. When they show racial breakdowns they only show three categories: African, European, and Asian.

Having grown up in the San Francisco Bay Area and being nearly fluent in Spanish, I had a simple question:

Huh? What about Hispanic people?

Perhaps modern genetics doesn’t see Hispanic as a distinct race at all, but rather as a mix of races. Is that the case?

I guess that would add up. We know now that American Indians are basically Asians, and we also understand that modern Mexicans and South Americans are some mix of American Indian and European / African. So it’s actually not too difficult to grasp that other Hispanic people would also be some mix of those primary components.

I simply found it interesting that if a Hispanic person gets a modern DNA test (at least with 23andMe) there won’t be any information in the results about how “Hispanic” they are, since Black, White, and Asian seem to be the primary “races” recognized by genetics.

[ Note: I get the feeling this is the type of information that's interesting/controversial to people who've never heard it before and Grade A boring to anyone who works in the field. ]

I had a thought on aging and health the other day.

What if hitting 35 flips a switch in the body that says the following:

If you continue to act young, you can still be so (more or less) for another few decades. But if you slow down (which is what I expect and why I flipped the switch), then you’re deterioration starts now. Being and feeling young by default has now been discontinued.

In other words, once you hit 35 you now must actively tell your body and mind that you’re interested in being young, otherwise it slips into “old mode” and begins deteriorating you.

But if you stay active both mentally and physically it seems quite content to simply continue on as if little has changed.

Thoughts?

It’s that time again. My 2010 MacBook Pro has run its course and is falling down on a few key metrics:

SATA Bus Speed: I can’t run the latest SSD technology because it doesn’t support SATA III

Memory limit: It maxes out at 8GB of RAM

Poor Display Tech: The screen is extremely low resolution

So, my next system will be nothing less than silly, and I expect it to last at least three years:

A 2012 Model 15″ MacBook Pro with an 8-core i7 processor at 2.4 Ghz

1 GB of video memory

16 Gigabytes of system memory

A 512GB OCZ Octane SATA III SSD, sporting 6Gb/s

The high-res display @ 1680 x 1050 pixels

Yes, I think this will do nicely.

America is wide open and trusting. This shouldn’t change.

The idea of stopping terrorist attacks from occurring is simply asinine in this light, as it’s just too easy to walk into a mall and cause havoc.

The message to terrorists (also heard by the American people) should not be,

We’ll stop people from setting off bombs in malls.

…but rather,

It’s easy to set off a bomb in a mall. So what. If you do you’ll kill fewer people than died that day from car accidents — in a single large state. We’re not afraid. We’re American. We won’t panic and we’ll simply hunt you down and kill you.

Put things in perspective. Don’t overreact. Obesity and alcoholism make Bin Laden look silly by comparison.

Sure, we still stay vigilant. We still look for suspicious activity. We still report things that might be dangerous. And we build that defensive eye into our education system. But we don’t open our legs to fear by considering an attack to be proof that our security has failed.

Us being attacked isn’t a failure. A mall bomb or seven, or an airplane or two going down on the same day: we should consider these extremely annoying and grounds for an asswhoopin’ — not evidence of the weakness of our country.

We should plan on this happening. Expect it. And not flinch when it does.

This is how we increase our security — by collectively controlling our response to attack and putting an end to pretending it won’t ever happen.

::

Challenging Democrat James Polk and Whig Henry Clay, Smith prophesied that if the U.S. Congress did not accede to his demands that “they shall be broken up as a government and God shall damn them.” Smith viewed capturing the presidency as part of the mission of the church. He had predicted the emergence of “the one Mighty and Strong” — a leader who would “set in order the house of God” — and became the first of many prominent Mormon men to claim the mantle.

Smith’s insertion of religion into politics and his call for a “theodemocracy where God and people hold the power to conduct the affairs of men in righteous matters” created a sensation and drew hostility from the outside world. But his candidacy was cut short when he was shot to death by an anti-Mormon vigilante mob.

via salon.com

That’s new to me.
