I am stunned that Blizzard has had such a poor launch for Diablo III.

I couldn’t even get onto the server for two hours on the first night, and I just got killed by Belial because the lag was so bad that I was unable to even move. We’re talking FPM (frames per minute) here.

I can see them wanting everything centralized to avoid hacks, but lag in a single player game is simply ridiculous.

I give the game itself a 9/10, but the launch and the server infrastructure has been a 4/10. Major boo.

Anyone else playing and/or having issues? I’m danielrm26 on Battlenet if anyone wants to ping me for a session (assuming we can move).

I had an idea the other day about life achievement: if you currently have no plans to be worthy of a minor blurb on Wikipedia then you don’t really have any plans. That’s a low bar, and yet it’s miles above what 99% of people I know will ever accomplish.

Let’s unpack that.

What could you do in life that’s worthwhile that doesn’t earn one a quick footnote on Wikipedia? The easy answer is parenting, but it’s too easy. Being supportive of one’s biological offspring isn’t noteworthy to me, any more than eating when hungry is. You eat when you’re hungry, and you raise your progeny to be successful–that’s nature. Like Chris Rock said, “That’s what you’re supposed to do!”

So if those things don’t qualify, then what would? A few candidates: building schools for the poor, writing a popular book, being a successful artist, inventing a cure for a disease, being the first person to space in a homemade craft, or having a small radio show that touches people’s lives.

Again, the bar is very low. The standard is to make a ripple. To produce something. To affect the world in some positive way other than “He provided for his children.”, or, “She was nice to his friends.”

Quite simply, if you’re not working on something worthy of a Wikipedia entry, and you have no plans to, then what are you doing? TV shows, office cubes, paychecks, a couple of laughs, and then an eternity of silence.

Don’t be that. Be as least worthy of a Wikipedia entry.

::

I have seen so much death in my short life. I have had to do procedures called “Infant Trauma Surveys” which required us to image every single bone in a babies body. The purpose of these exams were to determine whether or not the child was being abused. The parents of these children were often told that their child was being checked out for growth defects. My coworkers and I knew even before we started imaging whether or not the child was a victim of abuse. The babies that were abused never cried as we took them away from their parents. Their eyes didn’t dart around the room looking for something to play with. They would lie down in any position we wanted without any effort from us. They would just lie there, too afraid to do anything. We always started from the head and worked our way down. The machine we used for these procedures would allow us to instantly see the radiographic image. I have always had a love for children so I would always volunteer to help hold them still for the procedure. This eight month boy gave me no resistance at all.

via reddit.com

Read the whole thread.

 Posted via email from danielmiessler.com | posterous

Gamification is a trend in technology right now where people are given micro rewards for accomplishing discrete tasks, such as completing a programming exercise, or completing an online profile, etc. It’s essentially a way to incentivize things that people don’t want to do.

And now one idea is to do it for homework. So, giving little badges to people who complete an assignment or something.

In my view this is precisely the wrong thing for people right now. We don’t need tricks to get people to do what they’re already supposed to be doing. Instead, we need to be telling people the opposite: that there are some things that suck, that you have to grind through, and that successful people are those who are able to do this consistently until a goal is reached.

If you play this incentives game with people then it will train them to give up when no such scaffolding exists, which is in most places that matter. It’s hard to go to college. It’s hard to raise kids. It’s hard to do many things, and people shouldn’t be taught that when things get difficult they should look for a kudos badge.

Self-discipline is one of the primary components of success. Let’s nurture that instead of trying to artificially engineer a way for people to be successful without it.

::

The diagrams and the whole business that I got the Nobel Prize for came from that piddling around with the wobbling plate.

via physics.ohio-state.edu

 Posted via email from danielmiessler.com | posterous
